How it all started

Part 3

The dresses inspired me to do princess tea parties. (see photos of dresses in part 1 and 2) I would need quite a few of these dresses.  I tired to find the supplier and spent days searching on Google, typing in the name on the label.  I could not find it.  Winners often carried discontinued items, so these princess dresses may be all there was.  The company may have closed their business.  I went back to Winners.  This time I bought another princess dress from another label.  The Medieval Princess Dress.  Here is Rosie modeling it.

I went home and Googled it and found the company "Little Adventures". After much research, I discovered that not all princess dresses were equal.  Some licensed princess dresses may look beautiful but the stiff fabric and itchy trim made the dress very uncomfortable to wear.  Some fell apart after a wash  Some you couldn't even wash.
After examining many princess dresses, I soon realized what an exceptional product "Little Adventures" made. Comfortable, washable, affordable and adorable.  No scratchy fabrics or itchy trims.  No zippers, buttons, snaps, ties, of Velcro to fiddle with.  Easy to put on and easy to take off.  The stretchy bodice accommodates many body types.  These dresses are super comfortable and there's room to move.  I decided "This is the line I am going to carry in my store".

How it all started

Part 2

My best friend, Nadine and I have been saying that one day we would visit her home town, Halifax. Life can be so consuming.  One year passed... then another... then another.  Fifteen years passed and we still hadn't made the trip. Last year I closed my business for the summer and finally this was our window of opportunity to make the trip. I was also inspired by the movie "Yes Man" and was saying yes to everything. So... YES to Halifax. Let's go girlfriend! Here's is a photo of us on the airplane:

Best Friends

Me and Nadine

I packed lightly.  The plan was that I would buy clothes in Halifax.  So we arrived in Halifax and headed out shopping.  Nadine suggested I try Winners (a retail store selling designer brand name clothes at a discount). I told her "I never find anything there". I didn't want to go... but...I'm the YES man remember? So I went.

Up and down the aisles...just as I did many times before...never finding anything I like.  Nadine went into the change room and I went along to be her fashion advisor (ha ha).  After her fashion show, I told her I would wait for her in the store.  The children's section was right outside of the change rooms.  I went into that section.  And that is when I saw "The Dress" (see photo in previous blog "How it all started part 1"). The photo doesn't do it justice.  When I saw it, I nearly hyperventilated. This was the dress of my childhood dreams.

I talked myself into buying it for my grand daughter for Christmas.  I ended up buying a blue one and an orange one... and another red one... and another and another.  For every little girl in my life, I bought one.  Here are photos of the other dresses:

These dresses were sold as Halloween costumes.  But to me these dresses would spark a little girl's imagination into a storybook adventure anytime of the year, not just on Halloween.  And thus my adventure began on that day, Friday August 28th 2009.

How it all started

Part 1

We are so excited about Rosie's Tea Party.  It has been a year in the making.  We invite you into a magical world full of fun and imagination.  It's where every girl is a princess.  Rosie will show you how much fun tea parties are and how you can have your own fabulous tea party.  Rosie's Tea Party was inspired by a dress I saw in Halifax.  When I saw it... I was breathless.  I would have thrown the hugest tantrum for this dress if I had seen this when I was a little girl.  I would have begged, pleaded, negotiated anything for this dress.  I had to have it.  Have a look.

Princess dress

This regal dress made of red velvet and gold brocade fabric with drop sleeves and gold trim is a princess's dream come true.  This is straight out of a fairy tale.  A dress that would take your imagination to a castle long long ago in a land far far away.  Where princesses, fairies, dragons and brave knights live.  A magical place full of adventure.  We hope that Rosie's Tea Party...our videos and our dresses do the same for you.

"It's the "Vintage Look" Mom"

Vintage jeans
Vintage Jeans?!

I was quickly corrected by my pre-teenage daughter and my grown son that the look this season is NOT the celebrity look. It’s the “Vintage Look”.  As they explained to me… it’s the ripped jeans, the scruffy jeans.  Oh yes… you buy the jeans in that condition.  Puhf!  My kids don’t have a clue what true “Vintage” is.

Back in my day, we bought our jeans stiff and dyed in their darkest blue.  I’m dating myself I know.  It took many washes to soften them up and get that faded look.  When we got them to that “Vintage Look”, the rips were real rips, made from wearing our favourite jeans day in and day out for years.  The rips were all in the right places.  That scruffy look was authentic.  Our jeans really did have a story to tell. We LOVED our favourite jeans.

Some people would wash them in bleach to rush the worn out look. That

was cheating. You’d be a phoney.  And that’s how I feel about the ripped, scruffy jeans in the stores this season going for 80 bucks. They are “Vintage Wannabe’s”…phonies! You’re not suppose to BUY jeans like that!... Your jeans GET like that by hard work and love.

Think about it…Isn’t it absurd to spend that kind of money on something that looks like the cat got to it? The only one that is working hard at getting the Vintage Look is the cat!  That’s my rant.  The End

What Is The Fashion Trend This Fall?

Back to school
Shooting for the stars or be a celebrity?

I was at Square One, one of Canada’s largest malls trying to figure out what the “Look” is for this season.  Judging by the window displays and the clothes on the mannequins and the huge print ads… I think I figured it out.  Everyone wants to look like a celebrity. That “Too cool for school” look.  And that “I’m a real somebody” look. It's the "Celebrity Wanna-be" look. Then I passed a sign that validates my conclusion.  Well whattaya know!

Everybody wants to be a somebody.  But you can’t roll out your own red carpet.  A red carpet walk is earned.  In this day and age of self promotion … narcissism is at an all time high.  With the internet, a delusional person could think that their every move or thought is worthy of posting and that someone out there is interested in what they ate for breakfast that morning.  And they are encouraged by all the attention they are getting.  They can video tape themselves passing gas and get a lot of hits on youtube. They just got rewarded for stupidity by all those adoring fans. Oh… it’s entertainment… I see.   If you're looking for love and respect and something that last longer than a 2 minute video…I quote from a Beatles song:

AND IN THE END THE LOVE YOU TAKE IS EQUAL TO THE LOVE YOU MAKE.

Ooops…I digress.  What was I blogging about?  Oh yes… The fashion trend for this season.

Like I said… everybody wants to look like they’re walking down a red carpet.  You can’t roll out your own red carpet!  If you want to feel important, the best way to do it is to make someone else feel important.  The look you should go for? I can sum it up in the lyrics from a song in the movie Annie:

Who cares what they're wearing

on Main Street or Saville Row?

It's what you wear from ear to ear.

And not from head to toe.

That matters!

Your Own Style

fashion trend

You decide what fashion is!

I had a friend who was going to a new school.  She was concerned with her clothes and wanted to buy some clothes that was “in” so she would feel part of the crowd.  Her father said “And you’ll look just like everyone else!”  She didn’t really understand this until she went to university for visual arts.  Everyone there dressed differently.  Everyone had their own style. Why?  Art students are the most creative people around.  Music students, theatre students, same thing.  They would rather start a trend than to follow one.

Although, for some people, imitation is not flattery.  They do not want anyone copying their style.  They pride themselves on their uniqueness. “Go find your own style!” is what they would tell you.
